Copyright, Licensing, Author Self-Archiving, and Exclusive Submission Policy

Penelitian Gizi dan Makanan (The Journal of Nutrition and Food Research) is committed to protecting authors' rights, ensuring transparent licensing practices, supporting responsible scholarly dissemination, and maintaining the integrity of the publication process. This policy establishes the journal's arrangements concerning copyright ownership, licensing, author self-archiving, exclusive submission, and the responsible reuse of published scholarly content.

1. Copyright Ownership

Authors retain copyright in their articles unless otherwise specified in a separate written agreement or required by applicable law.

Publication in the journal does not, by itself, transfer copyright ownership from the authors to the journal or its publisher. Copyright ownership and licensing information shall be clearly identified on the article's webpage and in its published full-text formats, including PDF and HTML where available.

Authors are responsible for ensuring that they have the necessary rights and permissions to publish materials included in their manuscripts, including third-party figures, tables, photographs, and other copyrighted content.

2. License for Published Articles

Unless otherwise stated on the article's webpage and in the published article, the final published article, also known as the Version of Record (VoR), is distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).

License information: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/

Under this license, users may share and adapt the published material for non-commercial purposes, provided that they:

  • Give appropriate credit to the original author(s) and the journal.
  • Provide a link to the applicable Creative Commons license.
  • Indicate whether changes have been made.
  • Distribute adapted material under the same or a compatible license, in accordance with the applicable ShareAlike requirements.

Commercial reuse outside the permissions granted by the applicable license requires separate authorization from the relevant copyright holder or an authorized representative, unless otherwise permitted by applicable law.

Any alternative license must be approved in writing by the journal and the relevant rights holders before publication. The approved license shall be clearly identified on the article's webpage and in the published full text. Unless an alternative license has been expressly approved and identified, CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 remains the applicable license for the Version of Record.

No additional restrictions shall be imposed on uses already permitted under the applicable Creative Commons license.

3. License to Publish

Authors retain copyright while granting the journal and its publisher a non-exclusive, worldwide license to publish, reproduce, distribute, publicly display, communicate, archive, preserve, index, and disseminate their articles in print and electronic formats, including current and future digital publishing formats.

This license authorizes the journal to:

  1. Publish and distribute the final Version of Record.
  2. Register a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) and maintain associated bibliographic metadata.
  3. Include articles in scholarly databases, repositories, discovery services, and digital preservation systems.
  4. Use appropriate third-party service providers for publishing, hosting, indexing, archiving, and preservation.
  5. Maintain the published article and associated editorial notices as part of the scholarly record.

Where a License to Publish Agreement is required, the corresponding author must complete the agreement and confirm that they are authorized to act on behalf of all co-authors before publication. The agreement shall be consistent with this policy and the applicable Creative Commons license.

The license to publish does not transfer copyright ownership to the journal.

4. Author Rights

Subject to applicable third-party rights, the relevant license, and any separate written agreement, authors retain the right to:

  • Share their work with colleagues and research collaborators.
  • Use their work for teaching, academic presentations, and scholarly communication.
  • Include their work in theses, dissertations, books, monographs, and other academic publications.
  • Deposit permitted manuscript versions in personal academic websites, institutional repositories, and subject-based repositories.
  • Reuse their work in subsequent research and publications, subject to appropriate attribution and applicable licensing conditions.
  • Retain patent, trademark, and other rights that are not transferred or licensed under a separate agreement.

Authors should acknowledge the journal as the original publication venue when sharing or reusing their published articles.

5. Preprints and Author Self-Archiving

The journal supports author self-archiving to facilitate scholarly communication, research visibility, and access to scientific knowledge.

5.1. Preprints

Authors may deposit and share preprints at any time, subject to the journal's submission and editorial policies.

Authors should disclose any publicly available preprint when submitting a manuscript. Following publication, authors should update the preprint record with the full citation of the published article, its DOI where available, and a link to the official Version of Record.

The availability of a preprint in a repository or on a personal academic website does not, by itself, constitute prior journal publication or concurrent submission to another journal.

5.2. Accepted Author Manuscripts

Authors may deposit their Accepted Author Manuscripts (AAMs) without an embargo in:

  • Institutional repositories.
  • Non-commercial subject-based repositories.
  • Personal academic websites.

The AAM must be identified as the accepted manuscript and must not be presented as the final published Version of Record.

After publication, the deposited AAM should include the full bibliographic citation, the DOI where available, a link to the official journal publication, and a statement identifying the applicable license where relevant.

5.3. Published Version of Record

Authors and other users may share and reuse the published Version of Record in accordance with the terms of CC BY-NC-SA 4.0.

Such sharing and reuse must comply with the license's attribution, non-commercial, and ShareAlike conditions.

5.4. Licensing of Deposited Versions

The license applicable to a preprint or AAM may differ from the license applicable to the published Version of Record, subject to the rights held by the author and any applicable agreements.

The CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license displayed on the Version of Record does not automatically apply to a separately deposited preprint or AAM unless expressly stated or otherwise applicable.

Authors must identify manuscript versions accurately and comply with the applicable copyright and licensing conditions.

6. Text and Data Mining

Text and data mining (TDM) of journal content is governed by the license applicable to the material being accessed, together with applicable legal exceptions and limitations.

Users conducting TDM must provide appropriate attribution and comply with the relevant licensing conditions. Uses outside the permissions granted by the applicable license require authorization from the relevant copyright holder or an authorized representative, unless otherwise permitted by applicable law.

Users must respect reasonable technical access requirements and must not circumvent access controls. Where available, the journal may provide information about bulk access, APIs, or datasets to facilitate legitimate research.

Any additional technical access procedures shall not be used to restrict rights already granted under the applicable Creative Commons license.

7. Third-Party Content

Figures, tables, photographs, datasets, and other materials reproduced from third-party sources may be subject to separate copyright, licensing, or permission requirements.

Such materials are not automatically covered by the article's Creative Commons license when a separate credit line or other notice indicates different terms.

Authors are responsible for obtaining the necessary permissions and providing appropriate acknowledgments and credit lines. Users must comply with the applicable terms when reusing materials excluded from the article's license.

8. Exclusive Submission and Concurrent Submission

The journal requires that manuscripts submitted for consideration be original scholarly works and not be under consideration by another journal at the same time.

By submitting a manuscript to Penelitian Gizi dan Makanan, the authors confirm that the manuscript is not currently under consideration by another journal and will not be submitted to another journal while it remains under editorial consideration at this journal.

This restriction applies throughout the editorial process, including initial assessment, peer review, revision, and the final editorial decision.

Authors must not submit the same manuscript, or a substantially overlapping version of it, to another journal until the manuscript has been formally rejected or its withdrawal has been confirmed by the journal.

The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that all co-authors are aware of and agree to this policy.

At submission, the corresponding author must confirm on behalf of all co-authors that:

  • The manuscript is not under consideration by another journal.
  • The manuscript will not be submitted elsewhere while it remains under editorial consideration at this journal.
  • The manuscript has not been published previously in a manner that constitutes duplicate or redundant publication.
  • Relevant preprints, prior dissemination, and substantially related publications have been disclosed to the editorial team.

The journal permits preprints in accordance with Section 5 of this policy. Sharing a preprint does not constitute concurrent journal submission. However, authors must disclose prior dissemination and any substantially related publications so that the editor can assess originality and potential overlap.

9. Withdrawal of a Submitted Manuscript

Authors who wish to submit their manuscript to another journal must first request withdrawal from Penelitian Gizi dan Makanan.

The manuscript must not be submitted elsewhere while the withdrawal request remains unresolved. Authors should wait for written confirmation from the editorial office that the withdrawal has been completed before submitting the manuscript to another journal.

If an editorial decision has already been issued, authors should follow that decision and any applicable editorial procedures.

10. Suspected Concurrent or Duplicate Submission

If the journal has reason to suspect concurrent submission, duplicate submission, or redundant publication, the editorial team will assess the available evidence and may request an explanation from the corresponding author.

The journal will handle such cases in accordance with its publication ethics procedures and relevant Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidance.

Depending on the findings and seriousness of the case, possible actions include suspension of the editorial process, rejection of the manuscript, communication with another journal or relevant institution where appropriate, and further action under the journal's publication ethics policies.

Any action taken will consider the available evidence, the authors' explanation, and the circumstances of the case.

11. Additional Permissions

For uses not permitted by the applicable license, requests for additional permission should be directed to the relevant copyright holder or an authorized representative.

The journal may facilitate such requests where it has been expressly authorized to do so. Any additional permission granted shall apply only to the scope and conditions specified in the written authorization.

12. Policy Transparency and Author Declaration

The journal shall make this policy publicly accessible on its website. Copyright ownership, licensing information, and the applicable Creative Commons license shall be clearly identified on each published article and in its full-text formats where available.

This policy shall be read together with the journal's submission guidelines, publication ethics policies, and License to Publish Agreement.

By submitting a manuscript, the corresponding author confirms on behalf of all co-authors that the manuscript complies with the journal's exclusive submission requirements and that relevant prior dissemination has been disclosed.

Where a separate License to Publish Agreement is required, the corresponding author must complete the agreement before publication in accordance with the journal's procedures.
