Abstract

Stunting remains a public health problem in Indonesia, including in North Maluku, an archipelagic province with a prevalence above the national average. Objective, to estimate the prevalence of stunting and examine its association with maternal, child, and household characteristics among children under five in North Maluku Province. This cross-sectional study used secondary data from the 2018 Indonesia Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) covering 922 children aged 0–59 months. Stunting was defined as a length/height-for-age z-score below −2 SD of the 2006 WHO Child Growth Standards. Data were analysed using the chi-square test and multivariable logistic regression. The prevalence of stunting was 34.4% (317/922), or 31.9% (95%CI: 28.1–35.6) after survey weighting. Stunting was associated with child age 12–23 months (AOR=2.99; 95%CI: 1.85–4.82) and 24–59 months (AOR=2.55; 95%CI: 1.65–3.93), mothers working as farmers/fishers/labourers (AOR=3.16; 95%CI: 1.65–6.05), mothers not working or in school (AOR=2.48; 95%CI: 1.33–4.62), more than one under-five child in the household (AOR=1.53; 95%CI: 1.07–2.19), and maternal height <145 cm (AOR=3.07; 95%CI: 1.68–5.64). Stunting in North Maluku is associated with child age, maternal occupation, the number of under-five children in the household, and maternal height. These findings indicate that stunting in this archipelagic province reflects both intergenerational (maternal height) and socioeconomic (maternal occupation) determinants.
