Ramuan atau jamu yang diteliti adalah yang pada kemasannya berlabel tambah darah atau salah satu khasiatnya menyembuhkan kurang darah. Pembelian contoh jamu dari warung-warung dan pasar di wilayah DIY mendapatkan 13 macam jamu jenis serbuk dari berbagai merek, satu macam dalam bentuk pil dan lima macam ramuan jamu godokan atau rebusan. Hasil analisis di laboratorium mendapatkan rata-rata kandungan besi dalam jamu serbuk berkisar 0.33 mg-13.65 mg, asam fitat 3.34 mg-67.65 mg dan tanin 57.89 mg-152.56 mg per bungkus. kandungan besi dalam godokan per 100 ml air rebusan hari pertama berkisar antara 0.19 mg-1.53 mg, asam fitat 23.95 mg-33.15 mg dan tanin 37.84-68.16 mg. Data pola penggunaan jamu dan kadar haemoglobin telah dikumpulkan dari 100 pengguna jamu (49 laki-laki dan 51 perempuan) di wilayah DIY. Sebagian besar (75%) pengguna jamu, sudah biasa menggunakan jamu satu bungkus per minggu, masing-masing 11% pengguna jamu, biasa menggunakan jamu tambah darah lebih dari satu bungkus per minggu dan satu bungkus per bulan. Rata-rata dan simpang baku kadar Hb pengguna jamu laki-laki dan perempuan masing-masing adalah 13.52 <span>± 1.369 g/dl dan 12.06 <span>± 1.219 g/dl.
