Sekitar 80% anak balita dapat pulih setelah mengikuti paket kegiatan selama enam bulan. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada tahun 1991 terhadap 60 anak usia balita dan telah selesai mengikuti pemulihan gizi buruk pada tahun 1987 sampai 1990, dengan tujuan untuk pengkajian keragaan mereka sekarang. Data yang dikumpulkan adalah berat badan, tinggi badan, umur, kondisi klinis dan sosial ekonomi. Status gizi ditentukan menurut baku Harvard serta gabungan indeks antropometri menurut baku WHO-NCHS. Sampel terbanyak berumur lebih dari empat tahun (40%) dan 2-3 tahun (30%), dengan umur terendah 18 bulan dan tertinggi 60 bulan. Tingkat pendidikan orang tua rata-rata SD, sebagian besar bekerja sebagai buruh dan tukang atau supir. Berdasarkan indeks Berat Badan/Umur, terlihat status gizi anak meningkat dibandingkan dulu (selesai pemulihan) yaitu gizi buruk turun dari 21.7% menjadi 18.3% dan gizi baik naik dari 3.3% menjadi 6.7%. Demikian pula indeks Berat Badan/Tinggi Badan, gizi buruk tetap 1.6% dan gizi baik naik dari  15.1% menjadi 36.7%. Sebaliknya, dampak gizi buruk waktu lampau terlihat lebih jelas dengan indeks Indeks Tinggi Badan/Umur, yaitu gizi buruk naik dari 33.3% menjadi 43.3% dengan gizi baik 5.0%. Jika digunakan gabungan ketiga indeks, keragaannya adalah 65% termasuk baik pernah kurang gizi, 20% gizi buruk dulu sampai sekarang, 8.3% normal.
