Berdasarkan penelitian terhadap 209 orang anak Balita dan 107 orang wanita dewasa pemetik teh di Perkebunan Teh, Pengalengan, Bandung, didapatkan bahwa 12.0 g% Hb (Se=83.5%, Sp=83.7%) untuk anak Balita, dan 12.0 g% Hb (Se=86.0%, Sp=68.1%) untuk wanita dewasa, adalah batas yang dinyatakan paling tepat untuk menilai status besi. Diatas atau sama dengan nilai-nilai tersebut seseorang dinyatakan normal, sebaliknya dibawah nilai-nilai tersebut seseorang dinyatakan defisiensi besi. Sedangkan nilai batas anemia untuk Balita adalah 11 g% dan wanita dewasa adalah 12 g%. Berdasarkan kedua macam indikator tersebut diatas (batas defisiensi besi dan batas anemia) akan didapatkan tiga macam status besi, yaitu: (1) anemia defisiensi besi, (2) non anemia tapi defisiensi besi, dan (3) non anemia non defisiensi besi (normal).
