Pengunaan vitamin A yang berlebihan pada ibu hamil dapat menimbulkan efek negatif yang tidak diinginkan terhadap janin. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membuktikan kebenaran dugaan tersebut diatas, dengan melihat kelainan anatomis dari anak yang dilahirkan, status vitamin A anak dan perkembangan pertumbuhan berat badan anak akibat pemberian vitamin A takaran tinggi pada ibu hamil muda dengan menggunakan tikus percobaan sebagai model. Perlakuan yang diberikan pada induk tikus hamil adalah pemberian vitamin A dengan takaran per kilogram berat badan setara dengan pemberian vitamin A pada ibu menyusui yaitu; 0 SI, 200.000 SI, 400.000 SI, 1 juta SI dan 2 juta SI dengan satu kali pemberian pada hari pertama setelah dikawinkan, serta 2 juta SI dengan 4 kali pemberian pada hari ke 1, 3, 5 dan 7 sesudah dikawinkan. Masing-masing perlakuan dengan lima ulangan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dari pengamatan secara visual tidak didapatkan adanya kelainan anatomis pada anak tikus yang dilahirkan, sehingga dapat dinyatakan bahwa sampai dengan takaran 2 juta SI vitamin A belum dapat menimbulkan kelainan anatomis pada anak tikus yang dilahirkan. Perkembangan berat badan dan status vitamin A anak tikus berbeda sangat nyata dengan kelompok kontrol, perkembangan berat badan dan status vitamin A anak tikus menunjukkan nilai tertingi pada takaran pemberian vitamin A satu Juta SI.
