Pemberian vitamin A dosis tinggi pada ibu menyusui mungkin dapat digunakan sebagai salah satu cara untuk menyampaikan vitamin A pada bayi/anak yang di susui. Kemungkinan adanya toksisitas kecil, karena vitamin A disampaikan melalui air susu ibu (ASI) sedikit demi sedikit. Sebelum menjadi program perlu diteliti kemanfaatan cara tersebut dengan melihat dampaknya pada status vitamin A bayi.</p><p>Sejumlah ibu (pada permulaan penelitian sebanyak 160 orang) di lingkungan Cipedes Kotamadya Bandung, dibagi menjadi 2 kelompok secara acak. Kelompok sampel diberi vitamin A dosis tinggi (400 000 IU) sedangkan kelompok kontrol diberi plasebo. Status gizi ibu dan bayi dan kadar vitamin A ASI diteliti 3 bulan dan 6 bulan setelah intervensi. Pemeriksaan vitamin A darah pada bayi dilakukan 6 bulan setelah intervensi.</p><p>Tidak ada perbedaan status gizi ibu yang bermakna antara kelompok sampel dan kelompok kontrol pada tiga kali pemeriksaan. Enam bulan setelah intervensi keadaan gizi bayi yang berumur 10-11 bulan pada kelompok sampel lebih baik "dari kelompok kontrol. Kadar vitamin A ASI kelompok sampel 3 bulan setelah intervensi naik secara bermakna,yaitu dari 23 ,2 mcg/dl menjadi 32,2 mcg/dl. "Enam bulan setelah , intervensi kadar vitamin A ASI kelompok sampel dan kelompok kontrol masing-masing 16,7 mcg/dl dan 13,5 mcg/dl. Kadar plasma vitamin A pada bayi kelompok sampel (24,2 mcg/dl) lebih tinggi secara bermakna dari kelompok kontrol ialah 18,4 mcg/dl.</p><p>Pada penelitian ini diamati: (i) kadar vitamin A ASI mengalami kenaikan bermakna sampai 3 bulan setelah intervensi, (ii) status vitamin A bayi yang ibunya diberi vitamin A dosis tinggi lebih baik dari kelompok kontrol, (iii) adanya kemungkinan terjadinya kenaikan berat yang lebih baik pada bayi yang ibunya mendapat vitamin A dosis tinggi.
