Kurang Kalori Protein berat (gizi buruk) pada masa usia Balita dapat mengakibatkan perkembangan fisik dan mental terhambat. Disamping penyakit infeksi, kurang konsumsi makanan merupakan salah satu penyebabnya. Makanan anak balita sangat tergantung dari apa yang diberikan oleh ibunya atau orang lain yang mengasuhnya; maka tepat kiranya bila dalam pemulihan gizi buruk pada anak Balita, dilakukan pendidikan gizi dan kesehatan kepada ibu disamping pengobatan penyakit infeksi terhadap anak. Dalam makalah ini dilaporkan hasil penelitian yang bertujuan untuk mempelajari perubahan pengetahuan ibu tentang gizi dan kesehatan, konsumsi kalori dan protein serta rata-rata kenaikan berat badan anak terhadap baku setelah intervensi selama enam bulan. Penelitian dilakukan terhadap 40 anak usia Balita pengunjung Klinik Gizi, Puslitbang Gizi, Bogor. Selama penelitian subjek datang 12 kali: empat kali pada bulan pertama, enam kali pada tiga bulan selanjutnya dan dua kali pada dua bulan terakhir. Pemberian vitamin A dosis tinggi dilakukan pada kunjungan pertama, sementara pengobatan penyakit infeksi, pendidikan gizi dan kesehatan kepada ibu, serta pemberian susu skim 150 gram kepada anak gizi buruk dilakukan pada setiap kali kunjungan. Sebagian besar penderita gizi buruk berasal dari keluarga dengan sumber mata pencaharian sebagai buruh; pengeluaran per kapita per bulan Rp. 20.000,- ke bawah, dan sebagian besar ibu subjek berpendidikan tidak tamat SD. Setelah intervensi, terdapat kenaikan rata-rata BB/U sebesar 157 persen terhadap baku, serta perubahan yang bermakna, baik pada pengetahuan ibu tentang gizi dan kesehatan pada taraf uji 0.05, maupun rata-rata persentase konsumsi kalori dan protein terhadap kecukupan (p<0.01).
